Muriel's Red Cake
  • 4 tbsp. red food coloring

  • 3 tbsp. Nestle milk cocoa

  • ½ c. Crisco

  • 1 ½ c. sugar

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 c. buttermilk

  • 2 c. flour

  • ¼ tsp. salt

  • 1 tsp. vanilla

  • 1 tsp. baking soda

  • 1 tbsp. vinegar

 

Directions:

 

Mix food coloring and cocoa. Let stand. Cream the Crisco and sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Add coloring, mix and beat. Add buttermilk and flour slowly, blending after each addition. Add salt and vanilla, beat well. Remove from mixer. Add soda and vinegar and mix by hand. Bake in three 8-inch pans 25-30 minutes at 325 degrees.

 

Icing:

1 c. milk

5 tbsp. flour

1 c. sugar

1 c. butter flavor Crisco

1 tsp. vanilla

Cook milk and flour until thick. Cool. Beat sugar, Crisco and vanilla. Add cooked mixture and spread between and over cake layers.
