Grandma Luella's Chocolate Cake


Everyone needs a moist classic chocolate cake recipe. This is my favorite and one I love to make in memory of my Grandma. Double the batter to make a large bakery style sheet cake, or bake as a 13X9, Bundt, or two 9” cakes. A slice paired with a cold glass of milk or hot cup of coffee is an absolute treat.

2 cups flour

1 cup sugar

4 TBS cocoa

1/2 tsp baking soda

1 1/12 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup real mayonnaise

1 cup cold milk


Sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cocoa. Add vanilla, mayonnaise and milk. Beat well and bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean. Do not overbake.

Tip: Cakes and cookies continue to cook once they are removed from oven. Avoid overbaking and drying baked goods out, by removing them from oven earlier rather than later.


Chocolate Buttercream

1 cup salted butter, room temperature

½ cup cocoa

1/4 cup milk

3 cups powdered sugar

1/3 cup whipped cream

1 teaspoon vanilla
